ESOCS and Spiritualism: Understanding Why Spiritualism is Key to Life

Introduction to ESOCS

The Eternal Sacred Order of Cherubim and Seraphim (ESOCS), is an African initiated church founded in Lagos, Nigeria in 1925. The Church has a unique spiritual doctrine that strongly goes against any form of spiritism, as stipulated in Ecclesiastes 9:5. ESOCS members are sternly advised against activities associated with darkness, in line with the teachings of Ephesians 5:11. The defense for the belief system of ESOCS is not necessarily against maintaining spiritual practices but against the misunderstanding and misuse of spiritual gifts.

Deciphering the Teachings of ESOCS

ESOCS teachings, true to Gal 4:19; Col 1:27, place emphasis on Christ being formed in believers. They believe in the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit as stated in 1 Cor 2:12-‐13; Rom 8:14. They stand firmly in the belief that the natural man does not accept the things of the spirit of God because they are spiritually discerned, as referenced in 1 Cor 2:14. In essence, the ESOCS teachings echo the principles of spiritualism, condemning any form of misconstrued spiritual practices that do not align with the teachings of Christ.

Distinguishing Between Spiritualism, Spiritism, and Consulting Mediums

Spiritualism is a religious practice often associated with the belief that spirits of the deceased have both the ability and the inclination to communicate with the living. Spiritism, on the other hand, invokes the spirit for purposes of relaying messages or gaining knowledge about the future, suspicions, and unknown things (Deuteronomy 18:10-12). Consulting mediums and spiritists is strongly condemned in ESOCS, as proclaimed in Leviticus 19:31, because it falls under acts manipulating spiritual entities, often for personal gain or advantage.

Why Does ESOCS Condemn Spiritism and Consultation with Mediums?

ESOCS condemns spiritism and consultation with mediums because they often involve the practice of conjuring spirits, and this contradicts Biblical teachings. Consulting mediums or practicing spiritism essentially amounts to diverting one's focus from God and instead seeking alternative spiritual guidance, therefore, amounts to idolatry, which is against the principles of ESOCS and the teachings in 1 Timothy 4:1-2.

Influence of Spiritualism in ESOCS

In ESOCS, spiritualism is not about communicating with the spirits of the dead or dabbling in spiritism. Spiritualism in this context means understanding the guidance and influence of the Holy Spirit in individual lives and the Church community. This understanding lies in the essence of their teachings, emphasizing that the Holy Spirit is the source of guidance and wisdom, as directed in scriptures like 1 Cor 2:12-‐13; Rom 8:14.

The Role of Prayer in ESOCS and Spiritualism

Prayer is considered a critical facet in both ESOCS and spiritualism. Through prayer, ESOCS members communicate with God, seeking his guidance, wisdom, and blessings. It is through prayer that they receive the strength to discern and walk in the spirit rather than in the flesh, as advised in the scriptures.

Understanding Spiritualism: The ESOCS Perspective

From the perspective of ESOCS, spiritualism is a life of living according to the Spirit of God, according to Romans 8:14. They understand that only through the Holy Spirit's enlightenment can they fully understand the will of God and live it out in their daily lives.

The Significance of Spiritualism in Life

Spiritualism, according to the ESOCS perspective, is an essential aspect of life. It helps individuals to guide their actions, attitudes, and aspirations in life, keeping them aligned with the will of God. Furthermore, through spiritualism, believers can get comfort, inspiration, and guidance during trying times.

Essence of Spiritualism in ESOCS and Personal Life

The essence of spiritualism in the ESOCS church and the personal lives of its members is demonstrated in their reverence for God’s teachings. The Church teaches its believers to live a life controlled by the Spirit and not by the flesh. This is what spiritualism means in their everyday life and in their walk with God.

Counterarguments to Spiritualism

Despite the significant role of spiritualism in ESOCS Church, there are critics who argue against it. Some view spiritualism as a form of distraction from practical and real-world issues. These counterarguments, however, are often based on a lack of understanding or a misinterpretation of what spiritualism embodies in the context of ESOCS.

Conclusion: ESOCS and Spiritualism in Contemporary Society

Despite the challenges and varying opinions about spiritualism, the ESOCS Church continues to uphold its principles, promoting spiritualism in its purest form. As we navigate the complexities of contemporary society, the teachings of the ESOCS Church on spiritualism provide guidance and a moral compass fo
